Preventing and cleaning stains on vinyl upholstery

Vinyl upholstery is a popular choice due to its durability and ease of maintenance. Here's a guide on preventing and cleaning stains on vinyl upholstery:

Preventing Stains

  • Regular cleaning
    • Keep your vinyl upholstery clean by regularly dusting or vacuuming it. This prevents dirt and debris from accumulating, reducing the chances of stains forming.
  • Quick cleanup:
    • Attend to spills and stains promptly. The longer a substance sits on vinyl, the more likely it is to cause a stain.
  • Use protective covers
    • Consider using protective covers, especially in high-traffic areas. These covers can prevent direct contact between spills and the vinyl surface.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals
    • Refrain from using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive tools on vinyl upholstery, as they can damage the surface and make it more susceptible to staining.
  • Correct use
    • Help with proper usage of furniture, avoid sitting on the upholstery with sharp objects or wearing clothing with metal studs or sharp edges that could scratch or puncture the material.

Cleaning Stains

  • Spot cleaning
    • For small stains, start by blotting the affected area with a clean, damp cloth to remove as much of the stain as possible.
  • Mild soap solution
    • If water alone doesn't do the trick, mix a mild solution of warm water and a gentle dish soap. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and gently blot the stain, working from the outside toward the centre to prevent spreading.
  • Vinyl cleaner
    • If the stain persists, you can use a commercial vinyl cleaner, for example, Onyx F by Essence. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility with your upholstery.
  • Avoid abrasive tools
    • Refrain from using abrasive brushes or scouring pads, as they can scratch the vinyl surface. Instead, opt for soft brushes or cloths, for example microfibre, to avoid causing damage.
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly
    • After cleaning, rinse the area with clean water to remove any residue. Then, dry the upholstery thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots or mould growth.

By following these preventive measures and cleaning techniques, you can keep your vinyl upholstery looking pristine.  To extend its lifespan and to keep your upholstery flexible and prevent hardening over time, especially for moving wash units, apply a leather softener or baby cream to the fabric. Always test the cream on a hidden area to check for compatibility before applying it on the visible side of the chair.
